Bindings

Late fifteenth-century German binding of half calf over wooden boards. The spine has three raised bands and is blind-tooled with horizontal lines of small ornaments and fleurons. The leather, where it overlaps onto the upper and lower boards, is blind-tooled with lines of lozenges containing fleurs-de-lys and smaller ornaments and fleurons. In red pencil manuscript on a paper label at the head of the spine are the words: Casus breves decretales. In black ink manuscript on the paper label beneath the title are the date and place: 1484 Straßburg. There are the remains of two decorated metal clasps on the upper and lower boards with the catch on the upper board. Bound at the back and front of the book next to the boards are fragments of vellum with fifteenth-century writing in ink manuscript in Latin. The lower board is becoming detached from the spine at the joint and there is damage to the head and tail of the spine. Size: 303 x 220 mm. Leaf size: 288 x 207mm.

Bound with 1 other publication. Volume contents: 1. de Dalen, M: Casus breves decretalium, 1485. -- 2. Bottoni, B: Casus longi bernardi super decretales, 1484.

Provenance

Part of the foot of leaf a2, which once bore an oval purple library stamp, has been torn out. The stamp has left its impression on the verso of the title page.
