Description
The first accrual comprises six letters from the composer Gerald Finzi to the composer Kenneth Leighton. The seventh letter is from Evelyn Rothwell to Gerald Finzi, with a note on it by Finzi fowarding the letter to Leighton.
A second accrual comprises 10 letters and a black and white photograph. The letters are mainly from James Denny and concern arrangements for Leighton's concerts. One of the concerts was held at the University and another at the Leeds Triennal Festival. There are some letters about Leighton's autograph scores. One handwritten letter is incomplete.
The photograph is of Leighton with Peter Mann, an English lecturer at the University around 1960.
Biography or history
Kenneth Leighton (2 October 1929-24 August 1988) was a British composer and pianist. He wrote church and choral music, symphonies, concertos and one opera. Leighton composed pieces for various instruments including organ, piano and oboe. Leighton held academic posts in the Universities of Oxford, Leeds and Edinburgh. Gerald Raphael Finzi (14 July 1901-27 September 1956) was a British composer. He was famed primarily for his work as a choral composer. Finzi wrote large-scale compositions for solo voice, clarinet and cello.
