Description

Comprises personal notes made by Joseph Bufton on blank pages and margins of a printed almanac 'Rider's British Merlin 1677'. The notes record births, marriages and deaths, bills, accounts of letters between Joseph Bufton and his brother John, notes of visitors, and accounts of local events and people in the years 1678-1699, with a particular concentration on numerous accounts of personal injuries caused by every-day duties.


Bound in worn stained vellum. One of the two metal clasps remains. Held in a modern custom-made case entitled 'Joseph Bufton's Diary 1', together with two more of his diaries (MSS 9 and 10). Written in a late secretary hand.

Biography or history

Joseph Bufton was a weaver in Coggeshall, Essex.
