Comprises autograph French manuscripts of Henry Céard towards various of his poems, plays, and prose writings; also, many letters from or to him, dated between 1873 and 1921; together with various editorial notes concerning the manuscripts written in other, more recent, hands, partly in French and partly in English, and a copy of André Gill: 'Vingt portraits contemporains', Paris, s.d.


Most of the material is held in box files labelled A-H, O-U.

Biography or history

Henry Céard was born in Paris in 1851. He was a naturalistic writer and author of two novels: 'Une belle journée' (1881) and 'Terrains à vendre au bord de la mer' (1906). He was one of the original members of the Académie Goncourt.
