Description
Comprises: (1) 'Poems, by two brothers', 1st edition, London, 1827, actually poems by the three brothers, Frederick, Charles, and Alfred Tennyson; (2) 'A collection of autograph letters from Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Lady Emily Tennyson (his wife), and Hallam, Lord Tennyson (his son) to various correspondents, 1844-1892', concluding with a printed funeral service; (3) 'Tennysoniana. A collection of autograph letters from Alfred Tennyson, together with eight letters from his son Lionel Tennyson to Henry Cameron and other miscellaneous correspondence', with a portrait of Alfred Tennyson taken from a photograph opposite the title-page; (4) Green box containing '3rd copies' of (2) above in typescript and of 40 letters from Hallam, Lord Tennyson to Bram Stoker, dated 1881-1906, also in typescript; (5) Autograph manuscript letter from Alfred Tennyson to Mr Philpott, dated 1 Nov 1869, Hazlemere, a more recent acquisition to the archive, held in an envelope.
The three vols are finely bound in dark green leather with gilt lettering embossed on their spines, the printed one being held in a solander and with brown silk on both fly-leaves and inside covers.
Biography or history
Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson (1809-1892) was poet laureate in succession to Wordsworth from 1850. For a full account of his life and work see the Dictionary of National Biography.
