Features

In five of the woodcuts, parts of the figure of the partially-clothed Christ have been obscured with ink manuscript.


Nine lines of text on the recto of leaf xiii have been scored through with black ink manuscript.


This copy is missing leaves lxxxi and lxxxi (signatures M5 and M6).


Bindings


Binding of half pigskin over bevelled wooden boards. The pigskin on the upper and lower covers is blind-tooled with a border of fillets and an interlace design containing stylised foliage. The spine has four raised bands. Written directly onto the spine in black ink manuscript in the second panel are the words: Vita Christi. Written directly onto the spine in black ink manuscript in the fourth panel are the place and date: Augspurg 1494. The book is fastened with two decorated metal clasps with pigskin straps catching on the upper board. Size: 285 x 215mm. Leaf size: 272 x 190mm.

Written in black ink manuscript beneath the title on A1r in imitation of the type: durch Iosephu[m] den iudischen geschicht schreiber beschriben.


Bookplate of the Benedictine abbey of Saints Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg on the front pastedown.


Book label on the front pastedown: Progel. The book was probably owned by Joseph Bonaventura Progel.


Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the recto of the front free endpaper. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
