Authorship unknown. Sometimes attributed to Pliny the Younger, but generally to Aurelius Victor from the sixteenth century. (M.M. Sage, The De Viris Illustribus: authorship and date, Hermes 108, (1980), pp. 83-100).

The first leaf is mounted.


Bindings


Binding of full vellum over pasteboard. On the smooth spine is a pared brown leather lettering piece gold-tooled with the words: Eninc. episto. et alt. opusc. There is worm damage to the spine. The leaf edges are coloured green and the book has a green silk ribbon register. Size: 196 x132mm. Leaf size: 187 x 123mm.


Bound with 3 other publications. Volume contents: 1. Pliny, C: Liber illustrium virorum, 1478. -- 2. Laudivio de Vezzano: Epistolae magni Turci, c.1475. -- 3. Suetonis: De grammaticis et rhetoribus, 1478. -- 4. Albertus Magnus: De mirabilibus mundi, c.1478.

Provenance

Armorial bookplate on the front pastedown: Ex libris Marchionis Salsae. This is the bookplate of Giovanni Domenico Berio, marchese di Salza (d. 1791) and his son Francesco Maria (1765-1820).


Armorial bookplate on the back pastedown with the motto: Comme je fus. This is the bookplate of William Ward, 3rd Viscount Dudley and Ward of Dudley (1750-1832).


Small black and white armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the recto of the front free endpaper. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
