Some of the leaves are foxed.


Bindings


Binding of brown sheepskin over pasteboard, late eighteenth- or nineteenth-century. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border and frames of stylised foliage and other ornamental motifs. At each corner of the innermost frame is a blind-tooled ornament and at its centre is a blind-tooled lozenge-shaped motif. The spine has five raised bands with gold-tooled double fillets to either side of each. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Poggio La historia Fiorentina - Vinegia 1476. The other five panels are blind-tooled with floral and other motifs and there are bands of gold-tooled ornamentation at the head and tail of the spine. The leaf edges of the book are coloured red. Size: 320 x 237mm. Leaf size: 313 x 225.

Provenance

At the base of leaves a1r and n7r is a monogram stamp in black with the letters FG.


Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
