Search the Brotherton Collection Manuscript Verse Index

The Brotherton Collection Manuscript Verse index gives detailed information about almost 7000 English poems found in the collection of over 180 17th and 18th manuscripts in the Brotherton Collection that contain verse.

The single-line search box allows free-text searching of all the fields in the BCMSV records including:

  • first lines
  • last lines
  • author
  • attribution
  • title
  • contents
  • date
  • verse form
  • manuscript reference
  • bibliographical reference.

The advanced search box allows combined searches across the following fields:

  • first lines
  • last lines
  • author
  • attribution
  • title
  • contents
  • manuscript reference

To search for particular phrases, enclose words within double inverted commas. Selecting an individual record number in the list of results brings up the full record for that item.

A list of relevant manuscripts can be viewed in the full catalogue. Many of these catalogue records feature examples of digitised pages.

Each of these records displays a section headed 'Other related records' which includes links to the BCMSV index entries for the manuscript in question.
