The death of Harold II in 1066 marked the end of Anglo-Saxon rule. His short reign is remembered for two major battles: his victory at Stamford Bridge against the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada, and the Battle of Hastings in which he was defeated by William the Conqueror.

The reverse of the coin is inscribed with PAX (peace), showing that Harold was perhaps somewhat overoptimistic about his reign.
