The very first layer of the draft text consists of manuscript notes, spread over four pages of ‘The School of Eloquence 1' (BC MS 20c Harrison/03/SCH/01). Harrison writes principally in couplets, the only apparent order to the text.

It has not been possible to transcribe all of the manuscript notes, and Harrison himself has been unable to decipher some of his writing of the period. He has said that these notes were meant to inspire a sense of what a line should be, rather than be clearly read.
