Discover the stories behind the coins of Alexander the Great held at the University of Leeds.
Alexander the Great was a hugely important figure in the ancient Mediterranean world. He conquered a vast territory from Greece to India. He was also responsible for the production of hundreds of millions of gold, silver, and bronze coins, some of which are now held in Leeds University Library Special Collections.
In this talk Simon Glenn, the Library’s Numismatics Project Officer, will discuss Alexander and his coinage. Simon will explore how coins from the University's Coin Collection are being used in an international project to make them available to a wider audience online. He will also discuss the results of his own research on Alexander’s coins struck at the mint of Damascus.
There will be an opportunity to handle and look at the coins up-close at the end of the session.
