Words, Women & War: Forgotten Female Voices of the Great War

Actor, writer and Edinburgh Fringe performer Irene Lofthouse invites you to meet four Yorkshire women who contributed to the war effort.

Bradford-born Alberta was a member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment providing nursing care to military personnel. She was also a poet, a publisher, and a friend of Agatha Christie and JB Priestley.

Leeds-based Dorothy was the youngest Lady Mayoress and a Pals Battalion fundraiser. She was a poet and socialite with a great interest in the Yorkshire dialect and Gypsy lore.

Harrogate lass Betty was a YMCA volunteer and worked in Paris and Étaples driving the wounded.

York-born Flora was the only British women to officially serve as a soldier, which she did in the Serbian army on their front line.

Hear the voices of these forgotten women and learn about their lives during the Great War.

This one-woman dramatic presentation will last for an hour, followed by a Q&A session. Suitable for 14+.
