Dreams and Visions: Imagining the Unconscious

A selection of artworks from the University Art Collection exploring the unexpected and irrational world of the unconscious.

Monday 11 September - Saturday 25 November

Artists have long been drawn to depict a world beyond reality. A rich and subversive vein of creativity is available to artists in depicting dreams, nightmares, visions, illusions and other imagery derived from the unconscious. This display, selected from the University Art Collection, includes artists who explore this unexpected and irrational world of the mind.

The collection of art on display include works by: Quentin Bell, Alan Davie, John Piper and Winifred Turner.

Included is a work donated by Philosophy graduate Roger Godden. Displayed for the first time in the Gallery, "The Artist and The Gardener" (2015) is an oil painting by Neil Simone. The painting was inspired by, and includes, one of Roger's poems.
