The term “still life” usually refers to a painting or drawing that features inanimate objects as its subject. This type of art can be found as early as ancient Egypt, but became a prominent art genre in the 1600s - you may have seen old oil paintings hung in galleries. But in this still life workshop we'll be taking a different approach and getting creative with collage!

Collage is a fun and pressure-free way to create art even for complete beginners. We know drawing or painting can feel daunting. This collage workshop could be a perfect solution if you'd rather relax, get creative, and meet new people.

During the workshop we will think about how we can translate something three dimensional into a two dimensional work of art. Inspired by Patrick Caulfield's ‘Picnic Set’, and working with the theme of ‘home’, we will create a collaborative still life composition, and then collage our own still life artworks.

Each object depicted in a still life artwork tells a story and is imbued with meaning. We encourage participants to bring an object (or two) to the event that you would like to include in the still life composition. This could be an object of sentimental value, or simply of interesting textures and shapes. What object/item speaks about home to you?

Then we'll show you how to break a composition down into simple shapes and forms cuts from colourful, patterned or textured papers. We'll also experiment with form, shape, colour, texture and scale. By taking away the stress of pencils and paint, we'll create playful and expressive works of art.

All collage materials will be provided, but if you have anything you’d really like to use feel free to bring it along.
