Heritage Open Day: Food for Thought...Dialect Discovery Day

Do you call it a packed lunch, bait, snap, snapping, nammet, nuncheon, Tommy, or something else entirely? Explore your dialect heritage and share your own words in this fun, Heritage Open Days event.

Discover and share your dialect heritage and find out more about the University of Leeds’ new Dialect and Heritage: The State of the Nation project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project will build on research undertaken by the University's School of English including the ground-breaking Survey of English Dialects and the work of the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (1964-1984).

The event will include regular screenings of a brand new short film which gives fascinating insights into the original survey. There will also be opportunities to look at some amazing original photographs, fieldworkers’ notebooks and word maps plus fun activities for the whole family. Don’t forget to contribute your own foodie words to our giant dialect maps!

This Heritage Open Days event is suitable for all ages.
