Public Art Walk & Draw

Make the most out of Spring in Leeds and join us for a special walk and draw tour around campus.

Stretch your legs with a relaxed stroll around the University of Leeds. Discover the fantastic Public Art on campus - highlights include work by Yorkshire's own Barbara Hepworth, and campus landmark, Keith Wilson’s ‘Sign for Art’ (the squiggles!)

As you walk round you will be guided through a series of quick and fun drawing activities inspired by the art you see. Never really drawn before? No worries, there will be plenty of handy tips to help you get started!

We will be on our feet in the open air for approximately 90 minutes, though it is fine if you need to leave early! If the weather is a little too drizzly we will revert to a standard Public Art Walk. Make sure you wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Please contact us in advance if your mobility is limited so we can plan the route accordingly.

Access Information

Getting Here

  • The meeting point for this event is in The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery, in Parkinson Building. There is step-free access – see our Visit information for more details.

  • The Public Art Walk & Draw can be made step-free: please contact us at gallery@leeds.ac.uk if you would like a step-free route.

Sensory

  • The walk takes place on the University of Leeds campus, which can be loud and busy with crowds.

  • We will be outside, meaning we may be walking in warm or cold weather with bright sun, rain and wind.

  • You are welcome to borrow anything you like from the ACCESSories Hub in The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery during the walk. Please remember to return the items before you leave.

In the Room

  • In The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery there are artworks on the walls, and some sculptures on plinths and freestanding in the middle of the floor.

  • The rest of the walk is outside on campus, where we will stop to draw by sculptures near the paths.

What to Expect

  • We will begin with a short introduction in the gallery. You will be given a clipboard with paper, pencil, graphite stick, and tracing paper to use during the walk.

  • The walk leader will take you to different artworks, saying a little about them and then prompting a short drawing activity. The drawing is about having fun and trying something new.

  • At the end of the walk, the leader will collect your drawing materials and any ACCESSories Hub tools, but you are encouraged to take your drawings home. They can show you back to the gallery where the walk started.

You can find more information about getting here, what to expect in our spaces, nearby facilities and additional access resources in the Visit information on our website. If you can't find what you're looking for or have any other questions, please email us at gallery@leeds.ac.uk and we'll be happy to help.
