Curating Class: Rethinking Art Exhibition Methodologies

Join this fascinating 1-day event on curating art by artists from working-class backgrounds.

In the last two years, we've seen major exhibitions engage directly with art by artists from working-class backgrounds. Some examples of this include After the End of History from Hayward Touring, Lives Less Ordinary at Two Temple Place, London and [uz], [uz], [uz] at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery, Leeds. Across galleries and public institutions, modern and contemporary working-class art is gaining increased visibility.

This event asks how we might understand such shifts. We will consider art exhibitions through the lens of representation. But we will also consider how curatorial methodologies can move beyond individual exhibitions, to inform ongoing museum practice.

Bringing together practitioners from across the sector, this event will examine how working-class art is researched, framed and mediated within institutions. Contributors will consider curatorial approaches that challenge established hierarchies. Discussion will also explore how we can support more accountable and equitable curatorial practices.

The event will take place from 11am to 4.30pm (registration and refreshments from 10.30am). Please note lunch will not be provided.

The event is organised by the University of Leeds’ Cultural Collections & Galleries and the Working Class British Art Network
