Celebrate the installation of Sir Eduardo Paolozzi’s iconic ‘Master of the Universe’ sculpture at the University of Leeds.
Join us for a special event to officially welcome this artwork on campus.
‘Master of the Universe’ is the latest addition to the University of Leeds’ extensive Public Art collection. It joins works by high profile artists such as Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Liliane Lijn. The piece was donated by Douglas Caster, who completed his degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Leeds in 1975.
Created in 1989, this Paolozzi sculpture is based on an imaginative drawing by artist and poet William Blake. It depicts physicist and mathematician Sir Isaac Newton.
The event will begin at the sculpture close to the Edward Boyle Library. After the ribbon cutting by Douglas Caster and a poetry reading by Matt Howard (Douglas Caster Cultural Fellow) we will head to the School of Music to hear from Brian Caster. Brian is the Director of Powderhall Bronze foundry, and will be sharing his memories of Paolozzi, first as his student, then as his colleague.
We will finish off the celebration event with a drinks reception.
