‘One Night, One Dream, Life in the Lighthouse’ presents a major new commission by Leeds-based Iranian artist Mohammad Barrangi exploring notions of home, childhood and migration.
Inspired by his residency in the University’s Special Collections, this new body of work draws on a variety of sources including Iranian calligraphy, Middle Eastern textiles and manuscripts and European historic scientific illustrations. The exhibition features artworks in a wide range of media from installation to printmaking to sculpture and artist books, all in Barrangi’s vibrant and poetic style.
Centred on his experiences of travel, migration and disability, Barrangi’s work creates an imaginary world that blends childhood memories and storytelling with references ranging from biblical narratives and Iranian mythology to British literature.
Part of the citywide Smeaton300 programme, the exhibition also alludes to the impact navigation, astronomy and lighthouses have had in the movement of people.
