Being Romeo: Daniel de Andrade in conversation with Wieke Eringa

Daniel de Andrade reflects on his role as Romeo in 2000 and in reviving Northern Ballet’s production with a new generation for 2024 – in conversation with Wieke Eringa.

Daniel de Andrade, currently Artistic Associate at Northern Ballet, speaks in conversation with Wieke Eringa, Director of the University’s Cultural Institute, about his experience performing the role of Romeo in Northern Ballet’s 2000 staging of ‘Romeo & Juliet’. Northern Ballet has revived its award-winning production of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ for March 2024, after an absence of over 16 years. This talk explores themes and objects displayed in the Northern Ballet archive exhibition, Preserving the Passion: Northern Ballet’s 'Romeo & Juliet', at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery until 23 March 2024.

Brazilian-born Daniel de Andrade joined Northern Ballet as Principal Artist in 1995, performing and creating leading roles until joining the artistic team in 2003. He has danced with National Ballet of Portugal, London City Ballet, Zurich Ballet and Scottish Ballet.

As a freelance choreographer, his works for Northern Ballet include 'Glass Canon; Untainted Parallel'; 'Danzando Felini'; and 'Overworlds & Underworlds'. He created the full-length productions of 'Nijinsky – God of the Dance', and 'Chaplin, The Tramp', for Slovak National Ballet. In 2017, he created 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' for Northern Ballet.

Daniel de Andrade has worked as a guest with the American Ballet Theatre; Hamburg Ballet; Bern Ballet; Deborah Colker Dance Company; Phoenix Dance Theatre; Royal Academy of Dance; Ballet Central; The Ballet Boyz; Estonia Opera House Ballet; Royal New Zealand Ballet; and Slovak National Ballet.

Awarded the 2011/12 Dance Fellowship on the Clore Leadership Programme, de Andrade was mentored by Wayne McGregor and seconded to Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

Wieke Eringa is the Director of the Cultural Institute at the University of Leeds. A trained dancer and choreographer, Eringa was previously CEO and Artistic Director at Yorkshire Dance and former Director of Learning and Access at Northern Ballet.
