Make It Social: Collage & Zine-Making with Abby Boon

Create your own activist zine with Abby, and learn both collage and campaign skills along the way!

*Please note this event is for University of Leeds students only. Please register for a place using your University email.*

Try your hand at the grassroots campaign methods at the heart of our current exhibition, Animated Activism: Women Empowered, with creative campaigner Abby.

Drawing on feminist influences, we'll use an age-old method of getting your message across. Quick, cheap and simple to self-publish, zine-making is a staple technique for self-expression. In this workshop you’ll learn how to utilise this medium in art and activism.

We’ve delved into the University Archive, to find historic student newspapers for us to repurpose as collage material. Looking back on fifty years of protest, we’ll reflect on how we can make change in our own communities today. You’ll also learn simple bookbinding techniques to elevate your zine-making.

No experience needed, materials provided. Walk away with your own zine to photocopy and share!

Abby Boon (she/her) is a recent graduate from the University of Leeds, our current Digital Communications Intern, and, in her spare time, a founding member of local feminist creative collective ‘The Chica Coop’.

Last year, The Chica Coop had a zine accessioned into Cultural Collections that protested sub-par housing in Hyde Park. Living in LS6, Abby’s seen it all – rats, mould, a leaky roof – and created a DIY fundraising project to hold rogue landlords to account.

The Animated Activism: Women Empowered exhibition will be staying open until 7.30pm for you to explore and draw inspiration from before and during the event should you wish.

Please note that the Animated Activism: Women Empowered exhibition deals with themes that some people may find difficult, such as violence against women, sexual assault and domestic abuse. There may also be historic language that some may find sensitive or offensiveIf you are personally affected by any of the topics covered in this exhibition, please see the list of resources available online here or at the back of the large print guides available at the exhibition reception.
