Brontë Manuscript notebook

Description

Notebook containing untitled text attributed to Anne Brontë. The text is a discussion on the truth of the Bible, between two speakers 'S' and 'C'. One is a sceptic, the other a believer who justifies their belief in the bible in rationalist, scientific terms. The argument is heavily influenced by Humphry Davy’s book ‘Consolations in Travel; or, the Last Days of a Philosopher’.


The notebook also contains copies of the following Charlotte Brontë poems transcribed by A. B. Nicholls:

'St. John in the island of Patmos' ( ff6-8),

'The death of Darius Codomanus' (ff9-19),

'Tis the siesta's languid hour' (ff 19-21),

'Oh would I were the golden light' (ff28-29),

'When thou sleepest'(ff46-48,

'She was alone that evening' (ff58-59),

and 'I scarce would let that restless eye'(ff60).


The poems are listed backwards from last page of notebook. The notebook also contains manuscript notes giving details of the mss in an unidentified hand (2ff).


The notebook is bound with marbled covers, leather trim, and has 'Brontë Manuscripts' on the front cover. External binding cracked - end pages loose.

The notebook was acquired by Special Collections in 1955 from R. A. Brimmell.
