Ink manuscript note in the hand of Gilbert R. Redgrave on recto of front flyleaf: Note: The carefully illuminated arms at the bottom of page A2, the device of some former owner. This book is bound by Capé, the best of all for thin bindings! First edition with date - has the rare blank leaf at end.


In pencil manuscript in a later hand on recto of front flyleaf: Schedel's copy paginated by him & with his portrait at the foot of the first leaf.


The first woodcut initial has been coloured in red, blue, green and yellow, the remaining woodcut initials in red and blue alternately.


The three zodiac signs at the foot of leaf a2r have been coloured in.


Small details on the woodcuts of planetary signs have been highlighted in red.


Capital strokes supplied in red.


Bindings


Nineteenth-century French half binding of brown goatskin and brown marbled paper over pasteboard by Capé, whose name is printed on the upper left verso of the front free endpaper. The spine has six raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel is the title: Flores Albumasaris. Gold-tooled in the third panel is the date 1488. The pastedowns are of marbled paper featuring the comb pattern in red, orange, blue, brown, black and cream. The leaf edges are coloured red and the book has a green silk ribbon register. Size: 212 x 155mm. Leaf size: 210 x 150mm.

Provenance

A painted coat of arms featuring a moor's head has been added to the foot of leaf a2r, the device of a former owner, possibly Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514).


Inscription in black ink manuscript at the bottom of the verso of the front free endpaper in the hand of Gilbert G. Redgrave: Sold by Puttick & Simpson Dec 17th 1889.
