Description

The Leeds Women Anti-Apartheid collection includes a wide variety of material from minutes of meetings for 10 years from 1985 which document the start, rationale, development and achievements of the group; to many colourful examples of custom-made leaflets and posters, greetings cards, t-shirts, balloons, carrier bags and display boards of badges and photographs.

Biography or history

By the mid-1980s when South African state oppression and township violence were escalating, women in Leeds Anti-Apartheid urgently wanted to publicize the desperate position of women there and increased practical support. Many were experienced in feminist activism and used to organizing cooperatively in a non-hierarchical way. LWAA was formed to become an effective campaigning force with a focus on women and children. Locally, links were made with other women's groups to hold public day schools, organize boycotts, and collect medical and school supplies. LWAA skills, auctions, women's cabaret and karaoke nights helped raise funds especially for the Soshunguve Women's League in a township near Pretoria.
