Cyril Leslie Oakley was born in 1907 and educated at Portsmouth and Westminster. He was a student of Harold Leigh-Sharpe’s at Chelsea Polytechnic (University of London) and co-authored a paper for Parisitology with him (1927, 19(4):455-467). He also published independently while at Chelsea Polytechnic: (Parasitology, volume 18, 402; volume 22, 182, on Chondracanthidae). He graduated in 1930 with degrees in both zoology and medicine, and was an Assistant Lecturer in Zoology with Leigh-Sharpe at Chelsea Polytechnic from 1930 to 1931. He worked at the Wellcome Research Laboratories from 1934 to 1953, latterly as head of the Department of Immunology and Experimental Pathology. He was appointed Brotherton Professor of Bacteriology at the University of Leeds in 1953, a post from which he retired in 1970. He was a founding fellow of the College of Pathologists and at various times edited the Journal of Pathology and the Journal of Medical Microbiology. He was awarded a DSc by the University of
London in 1953, elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1957 and made a CBE in 1970. He died in 1975. Apart from bacteriology, he was interested in certain marine parasites, in medieval churches and in science fiction literature. He presented his own extensive collection of SF literature to the Brotherton Library. The following papers were originally collected by the University Archives but in accordance with an established joint policy, were kindly transferred to the Brotherton Library in August 1981 being principally personal and academic in nature and not departmental administrative papers. The Librarian regrets that for obvious reasons two boxes of these papers remain closed for the time being.
