Ornamental woodcut intials.


The text contains 171 woodcut illustrations.


There are woodcut architectural borders on leaves [I], [XCIII] and [CLXXXIII], each with an inset figure in the tympanum of a scholar at a reading-desk, and enclosing, respectively, a large woodcut of a battle scene, Hannibal's Oath, and the reception of the ambassadors of Ptolemy VI by the Roman Senate.


The final leaf is blank.

Bindings


Nineteenth-century binding of full parchment over pasteboard. The spine has four raised bands. The pastedowns are of blue and cream patterned paper. Size: 324 x225mm. Leaf size: 314 x 215mm.

Provenance

Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
