Description

The main text of the Governor's advice is preceded by an explanatory foreword signed by G.W.M., probably George W. Miller, the author of the letter to Gosse. The typescript was prepared by Miss Ashworth, 28 Victoria Street, [London] S.W.


In dark green leather covers with green ribbon. The title of the work is typed on a piece of paper stuck to the front cover. The manuscript letter is held in a pocket stuck to the inside back cover, with the typed note 'Letter from G.W. Miller to Sir Edmund Gosse 25-4-23'.

Biography or history

Lieutenant-General William Selwyn was appointed Governor of Jamaica in 1701 and died there in 1702

Provenance

In the accompanying letter by George W. Miller to Sir Edmund Gosse, Miller explains how he found a contemporary transcript of this advice in the papers of the late Hugh Marsham-Townshend at Scadbury Park, Kent, and thought it worth preserving
