Description

Comprises 16 out of a total of 17 vols. of Grundy's engineering reports, made for the purposes of record between 1767 and 1779. For a full records of contents see the article by O.S. Pickering referred to below.


Written in several different eighteenth-century hands, one of them probably autograph, with many carefully drawn diagrams or plans on folding pages, and with title pages in calligraphic display script. Bound in contemporary half calf with marbled boards, and spine labels lettered GRUNDY'S ENGINEERING. Each volume bears Lord Brotherton's armorial bookplate.

Biography or history

John Grundy of Spalding (1719-1783), son of John Grundy senior (ca.1696-1748), was an 18th-century civil engineer noted chiefly for his work on the fen drainage and river navigation of eastern England.
