Description

Contains probably a nearly contemporary copy of the diary kept by Sir Charles Somerset of his tour through France, Italy, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands between April 1611 and May 1612.


Written in a single neat seventeenth-century hand with pagination throughout the main text and ruled lines around it. Bound in leather with rubbed gilt and decorated tooling including the initials 'C S' on both outside covers and text and bibliographical notes in a different twentieth-century hand concerning Sir Charles Somerset on the inside back cover.

Biography or history

Sir Charles Somerset (ca. 1588-1665), a son of the earl of Worcester, was an English Catholic courtier. The writer of this manuscript copy of his diary is unknown.
