Contains: (1) Ff.1-34: The conclusion to Mr Holmes' lectures on 'hydrostaticks', prefaced by an index; (2) Ff.35-111: 'Astronomical lectures by Nicholas Saunderson LLD, FRS & Professor of Mathematicks in the Univ. of Cam:ge'.
Probably written in a single eighteenth-century hand. Bound in the original brown leather with decorated and panelled blind tooling on both outside covers, and with gilt decorations in seven compartments on the spine and the title 'SAUNDERSON ASTRONOMICAL LECTURES' embossed in the second one from the top, probably executed much later than the original binding. On the inside front cover there is an owner's armorial bookplate.
Biography or history
George Holmes (1662-1749) was deputy-keeper of the Tower records. Nicholas Saunderson (1682-1739), although blind from infancy, became professor of mathematics at Cambridge University during Queen Anne's reign and wrote several books on his subject.
