The archive of The Review was acquired for the Brotherton Collection in 1996.
The Review was one of the most successful literary ‘little magazines’ and enjoyed a ten year period of publication from 1962 to 1972. Its focus was contemporary English and American poetry.
The archive comprises of correspondence largely between the editor, Ian Hamilton, and poets submitting work for publication, and articles and poems submitted for The Review. This forms the bulk of the collection but there are also miscellaneous papers relating to finance and fund-raising to keep the magazine going, galley proofs and advertising copy.
The archive has largely been retained in the order in which it was acquired but with some rearrangements and has been organised in the following way:

'The Review' was one of the most successful British literary 'little magazines' devoted to poetry and enjoyed a ten-year period of publication from 1962 to 1972, edited by the poet Ian Hamilton. Its focus was contemporary English and American poetry. It was succeeded in 1974 by 'The New Review'.

The BC MS 20c Review catalogue is based on an historic inventory. The arrangement of material does not necessarily represent the original order of the archive and it is considered partly processed by an archivist. When making requests to consult, please be aware that there may be discrepancies between description and physical arrangement. The retrievable unit for this collection is file level.
