Capt F. S. W. de Winton (RNMN) - 1917 Sub Lt HMS Narwhal from recollections of his service while based in Ireland: "In April 1917 the United States came into the war and soon after the declaration 6 US destroyers led by the USS "Wadsworth" (Commander Taussig) arrived at Queenstown to operate under Admiral Bayly. This was a most welcome reinforcement, although no significant improvement occurred in U-boat sinkings until convoys were at last introduced from about July 1917. We got on well with the US Destroyers and they found Admiral Bayly a good man to work for. Further US Destroyers arrived, all 4-stackers, during the early months of the summer, and in July 1917 the 4 British destroyers based at Queenstown returned to the Grand Fleet at Scapa".
