Townshend, Charles Townsend, Viscount, 1674-17382
Carteret, E.1
Argyll, John Campbell, Duke of, 1680-17431

Sender: Carteret, E.

Recipient: Townshend, Charles Townsend, Viscount, 1674-1738

Letters: 4

Date(s): 31 May 1722 - 17 Jul 1722

Location: BC MS Misc. Letters 1 Jacobite 1722

Note: Concerning letters passing through the Post Office from supposed Jacobites. Also present are the official transcripts sent to Viscount Townshend by the Postmaster General of 45 of these letters opened whilst in course of post, and which were suspected to be of a treasonable nature. Viscount Townshend was at this time Secretary for the Northern department, the seat of the Jacobite trouble, and in that capacity gave strict orders to the postal authorities for the detention and examination of all suspected letters, hoping thus to lay hands on the rebel leaders. The letters show remarkable evidence of the vast web of intrigue spread all over Europe at this time, in favour of the Jacobites.
