Date(s): 28 Nov 1826 - 7 Oct 1847
Location: BC MS Mendelssohn/Letters
Note: The greater number of these letters are very lengthy, in all
they cover upwards of 150 pages, 4to. and 8vo. They were
written during a period of 21 years. The first letter was
penned when Mendelssohn was but 17 years of age, and the last

and nearly the whole of his period as a composer.
There are many important and interesting references in these
letters to Mendelssohn's composition's, to his contemporaries,
to the publication of his Works in London, to the conditions of
their publications and to their prices. He refers to Bach,
Handel, Chopin, Mozart, Cherubini, Liszt and many other famour
musicians, as well as Paganini, Jenny Lind and others. He also
describes his famous "Songs without Words", "Overture to A
Midsummer Nights Dream", "Rondo Brilliant" his Oratoria "Paul"
his edition of Handel's "Messiah" and Works etc.
These letters are preserved in the original 4to. volume as
arranged and mounted by Moscheles with his manuscript index and
