Note: Bound with typed transcripts. Marion Harry Spielmann, F.S.A., an Hon. Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Officer of the Order of the Crown of Belgium, and Chevalier of the Order of Leopold, was born in London on 22 May 1858, the youngest son of Adam Spielmann, banker, of Lombard Street and Hereford House, S.W. In 1880 he married Mabel H. Samuel, a sister of Sir Herbert Samuel, and only daughter of Edwin L. Samuel and Clara Yates. Their son Dr Percy E. Spielmann became a chemist, and was Head of Analytical Laboratory of the Department of Explosives Supply, Ministry of Munitions of War from 1914-19. Spielmann was educated at University College School, University College, and Lycee, France. From 1883-1890 he was art writer to the "Pall Mall Gazette", "Westminster Gazette" and other journals. He also contributed on literature, art, and politics to leading papers, magazines, and reviews. For seventeen years he was Editor of the "Magazine of Art", and he was also a
lecturer for the Royal Institution. He published many books on art, biography, and other subjects, and represented Great Britain at many International Exhibitions. He was Vice-President and Member of Council, Royal Society of Literature, and a member of the Council and Committee Royal Literary Fund. Between 1911 and 1921 Spielmann purchased and formed the collection for the State Art Gallery of Baroda at the desire of the Maharaja Gaekwar.
