Note: Explanation of the following two letters,which are copies of extracts from letters concerning Mrs Gaskell: 1) From Marianne Lumb whose mother adopted Mrs Gaskell and brought her up. The letter is to Mrs Lumb and pleads with her to take this step. 2) Extract from a letter of Mr Stevenson's second wife (ie. Mrs Gaskell's step-mother) to Mrs Lumb at Knutsford, telling of Mrs Gaskell's devotion in nursing her father during his last illness. Details of Mrs Gaskell's visit to Germany and France; reply to Clement Shorter's request for information about her mother's courtship and marriage; (dictated) the relationship between Mrs Gaskell and her aunt, Mrs Lumb; arrangements for a meeting with Clement Shorter.
