Note: Date from postmark. A small folded sheet bearing 2 bars of music with words signed below: "M Costa, 1875". The address is written opposite the signature, "59 Eccleston Square, London". The address on the envelope is Alphington, Exeter. Accompanying the

music, and of a size to fit the envelope, is a small note probably serving as a compliments slip which is signed by Costa and reads: "Messrs Mitchell & Co. to the particular care of Mr [P] Rettell. This is followed by 2 illegible words, perhaps a name. It is unclear how, or if, this slip relates to the music. Sir Michael Costa, Italian-born conductor and composer, came to England in 1830 and rapidly became director of London's leading musical organisations.
