Who we are

Part of the University Library, the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery is a hidden gem at the heart of the University of Leeds campus.

The Gallery offers innovative contemporary exhibitions and displays treasures from the University Art Collection and the University Library Special Collections.

Entrance is free for visitors to experience the University's exceptional art collection. The collection includes stunning examples of European and British painting, drawings and prints, dating from the 17th century up to the present day, as well as small collections of sculpture, ceramics, miniatures and photographs.

The Gallery has developed enormously since it was first established in 1970. Take a look at our history timeline and see for yourself.

Vision and purpose

Our vision

The management of the University's unique and distinguished art collection and gallery will enable researchers, students and the general public, regionally, nationally and internationally, to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the visual arts as a vital element in the intellectual and spiritual well-being, and the self-understanding of individuals and communities.

Our purpose

We preserve, research, manage and promote the University's collection of fine and decorative art objects and enhance its accessibility and use for study, research, reflection and enjoyment, and provide a programme of related public exhibitions, lectures and other events, thereby establishing the art collection and gallery as a special facility and asset which plays an important part in building the University's national and international reputation as a vibrant educational, cultural and research institution.
