Note: Siegfried Sassoon, the poet, was born on 8 September 1886, and educated at Marlborough, and Clare College, Cambridge. During the war he served in France and Palestine, and many of his letters to Edmund Gosse were written in this period. His publications include "The Daffodil Murderer", "The Old Huntsman", "Counterattack", and "Collected War Poems". At Harlech with R. Ross, looking through his poems, G. to France, S. before a Military Board, losses of his battalion, verses in "Spectator"; (1918) with B.E.F. in Palestine, scenery of Samaria; respect for Turks; now ruminating on the ruins of the tapestry town of France, love to Mrs Gosse and Caruso, mail torpedoed; in hospital at Lancaster Gate; (1921) at Rome, Colosseum in moonlight; Exmoor; read sheet of poems; Hardy and critical article in "London Mercury"; G's helpful comments on technique; poem on Villa d'Este; (1927) R.
