Location: BC MS Misc. Letters 2 Needham
Note: Sabatier de Castres, Secretary to the French Ambassador at Turin. The original letters, written mostly in French, mounted and bound with English translations in two volumes. John Turberville Needham (1713-1781) was a Catholic divine who for more than thirty years enjoyed a high reputation as a man of science. He was particularly interested in natural science, and made many important microscopical observations. From 1762-67 Needham spent five years in France and Italy as tutor to Charles Dillon, eldest son of Henry, 11th Viscount Dillon. At the end of 1787 Needham retired to the English seminary at Paris where he devoted himself solely to scientific pursuits. In 1768 he was appointed director of the Literary Society at Brussels, and in 1773, director of the Imperial Academy, which office he held until May 1780. Needham's letters to M. Sabatier de Castres contain many interesting references to Rousseau and Voltaire, John Wilkes, and other eminent men of the period.
