Description
This collection comprises papers and audio recordings relating to the Poetry Room, formerly part of the School of English at the University of Leeds. It incorporates correspondence and other papers relating to the functions and workings of the Poetry Room; and audio recordings on reel-to-reel and cassette tape made by/for the Poetry Room, and received from the Poetry Room at Harvard University and via the British Council's Recorded Sound Section.
Biography or history
The Poetry Room in the Department of English Literature (later the School of English) at the University of Leeds openned in December 1962. From its earliest days, the Poetry Room was engaged in a programme of recording poets reading from their own works as well as exchanging recordings of poets with the British Council's Recorded Sound Section and the Poetry Room at Harvard University. Geoffrey Hill was the first Director of the Poetry Room, holding the post from 1962 until 1968. The Poetry Room closed ca. 1990.
Provenance
The papers and audio recordings held in this collection were transferred from the School of English to Special Collections at Leeds University Library in 2004 (papers) and in 2006-2007 (audio).
