Exhibition priorities
Bearing in mind the exhibition principles, our set of priorities for our galleries for the next five years are to:
- explore untold and hidden stories in order to increase representation of historically marginalised voices and experiences, including those by working-class people, people from the Global Majority, LGBTQIA+ communities and disabled people. We will weave subjectivity, decoloniality and intersectionality into narratives, as well as connecting the past and the present where relevant
- promote cross-cultural, transhistorical and interdisciplinary approaches to exhibition making
- contribute to the University of Leeds’ long history of feminist activism and advocacy, supporting feminist causes and women’s rights and championing women artists
- champion and support the talent of artists based in or connected with the Leeds region and students and alumni of the University of Leeds
- ensure representation of stories from migrants, refugees and asylum seekers from a wide range of backgrounds
- explore social and political protest movements and the relationship between art and activism
- reflect on the effects of climate change and contribute to the climate justice agendas
- undertake impactful co-curation or co-production with our target audiences in a collaborative and meaningfully way that subscribes to a ‘nothing about us without us’ approach
- create opportunities for the University and local communities to experience world-class art of national and international significance
- build on our history of innovative, collaborative and inclusive programming, making full use of the breadth and depth of the University’s cultural collections
- further expand and diversify the narratives presented in the collections’ areas and the audiences who encounter them
- offer critical engagement with the founding collections, new acquisitions and project outputs
- seek opportunities to develop philanthropic relationships.
