Propose an exhibition

Submit a proposal

We welcome exhibition proposals that meet the principles, priorities and target audiences mentioned in the framework.

We are interested in proposals from across the University, city and beyond, from artists, creatives, researchers, curators, exhibition organisers and community groups. We particularly encourage:

  • proposals from current students, societies, staff and alumni of the University of Leeds
  • partnerships involving other universities, museums, galleries, libraries or archives
  • partnerships involving community groups and other cultural organisations in Leeds and the surrounding area.

Submit a proposal

If you would like to propose an idea for a temporary exhibition, please complete the Exhibition Proposal Form and send it to us by email via gallery@library.leeds.ac.uk.

The form is a starting point for discussion. The Galleries are curated spaces, so externally initiated exhibitions are co-curated and/or delivered in collaboration with the Galleries team.

Please note we plan our exhibitions several years in advance. We strongly recommend that proposals are received as early as possible, ideally around three years before the exhibition’s start date.

Proposals for The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery

We particularly welcome proposals for group exhibitions that meet the principles, priorities and target audiences mentioned in this framework. Proposals for solo presentations or exhibitions that showcase the work of individual researchers or PhD candidates are less likely to be successful (unless they involve a connection with, and use of, our collections).

Proposals for the Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery

Please note our exhibitions should primarily draw from our cultural collections as described above, but the limited inclusion of external loans can be discussed.

The review process

Our curators will review your proposal. If it meets our criteria, we will discuss it in one of our quarterly programming meetings.

There are many factors which determine which proposals are taken forward for discussion. Proposals that do not align with the framework principles are unlikely to be considered. In addition, we aim to offer a varied, balanced and dynamic programme for each specific gallery and across the Leeds University Library Galleries service. We also need to consider the design and capacity of the gallery spaces and budget considerations.

We will be in touch if we wish to discuss your proposal further or to let you know if we are unable to take your proposal forward on this occasion. We receive a high number of proposals and we are not always able to discuss proposals individually with applicants ahead of submission.
