Piotr Wedelicki

Piotr Wedelicki (Vedelius) was born in Oborniki, near Poznan, Poland, in the latter years of the 15th century. His initial studies in philosphy were at Krakow (1512) and he then obtained a medical degree in Italy (1513) – he describes himself as “Doctor of Arts and of Medicine”.

He returned to Krakow where he became rector of the Krakow Academy (now the Jagiellonian University) and also delivered lectures on medicine. He translated three works by Hippocrates which were published by Vietor in Krakow between 1532 and 1535. He was court physician to King Sigismond I the Old and was also a member of the town council of Krakow. He died in 1543.
