Designated collections

Lord Brotherton (1856-1930) was a successful industrialist based in Wakefield. In the 1920s, he used his wealth to amass an impressive library of rare books and manuscripts.

On his death, Lord Brotherton left this library to the University of Leeds together with a large endowment that allows us to keep collecting books and manuscripts.

Today Leeds University Library’s Special Collections are internationally renowned. The collections cover a vast subject range. Particular strengths include English Literature, Romany material, books on cookery and food, Russian Literature and material associated with the First World War.
