War Graves

Leeds General Cemetery contains the graves of 105 casualties of the First and Second World wars. The memorials to these individuals can now be found at Lawnswood Cemetery.

The Leeds General Cemetery Company Ltd Archive contains a few papers relating to the cemetery war graves, most notably in MS 421/1/2/28. This file contains papers and correspondence between the Company and the Imperial War Graves Commission (later the Commonwealth War Graves Commission), relating to the erection and maintenance of war graves for both the First and Second World Wars.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website can be used to search for people who were casualties of war, or for individual cemeteries, to find out details of people buried there or commemorated in memorials. All persons buried at the Leeds General Cemetery listed in the memorial now at Lawnswood can be searched for on the CWGC website.

The majority of the war graves in Leeds overall are located at Lawnswood Cemetery, Holbeck Cemetery or Harehills Cemetery, though there are many others scattered around the city. More information about cemeteries in Leeds can be found on the Leeds City Council website.
