Profile

I advise students in the use of digital tools and techniques that are integral to their learning or creative interests, offering support through the Learning Development Team’s co-curricular programme (Skills@Library), 1:1 appointments and the library makerspace. I am co-lead of our team’s Website group, which is responsible for the maintenance and ongoing development of the library’s Academic Skills webpages and for the creation of new interactive learning objects and online resources. I am also Faculty Liaison for the Environment, Engineering and Physical Sciences and (jointly) Leeds Business School, working with module leads and Directors of Student Education to provide tailored support for their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through embedded workshops and curated online learning resources. This embedded support encompasses both familiar digital tools and tasks, such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel, as well as technologies and techniques that allow for more creative expression and authentic assessment, including scientific posters, podcasting and group video creation. My colleagues and I also advise and support students in the effective and responsible use of Generative AI for study and research.

In addition to my co-curricular and embedded work, I contribute to digital learning support at the University of Leeds through my participation in several cross-institutional projects and working groups. Together with colleagues from the Learning Development Team, the Digital Education Service and the Lifelong Learning Centre, and in collaboration with the Mature Student Advisory Board, I contributed to the creation of a Mature Students Skills Resource, an accessible suite of resources on academic skills which are tailored to the mature student experience. I have also worked with colleagues from across the institution to implement the Jisc Digital Capabilities Framework and Discovery Tool, which enable staff and students to surface, record and reflect on their digital skills and understanding and to create an individualised roadmap for developing their digital capabilities further.

I joined the Library Learning Development team in July 2022, following a decade of teaching at Sheffield Hallam University, Bishop Grosseteste University and the University of Sheffield. My postdoctoral teaching initially focused on my doctoral research on contemporary American fiction and narrative theory but subsequently expanded to encompass transdisciplinary themes in the humanities. More importantly, through my experience of working with diverse cohorts and of designing in-person, online and blended learning modules I became increasingly interested in the theory and practice of learning, teaching and assessment, especially experiential and reflective learning and digital learning. At the University of Sheffield, I convened and contributed to a range of academic skills modules while also supporting learning and teaching at an institutional level, both through collaborations with the Academic Skills Centre (301) and as a reviewer of applications for HEA/Advance HE recognition through the university’s professional development scheme.
