Overdue items and fines

If you do not return or renew items on or before the return date they will become overdue. You will then start to accumulate fines. We charge fines on overdue items to encourage customers to return items on time. Fines on overdue items will not show within your Library record until you renew or return them.

How do I know when an item is overdue?

Prevent items becoming overdue by regularly checking your Library record.
When an item becomes overdue we will email your University account. If you do not return the item we will continue to email you every few days.

If after several reminders you have not returned the item, we will invoice you for the cost of replacing it plus the outstanding fines. If you then return the item you will have to pay the fines but not the replacement cost.

Can I renew overdue items?

Yes. You can renew via self-service or your online Library record if your 7-day loan is up to a week overdue, or your Standard loan is up to two weeks overdue. After this you can still renew by speaking to staff at the enquiry desk.  Fines for overdue items will not show on your library record until you renew or return the item.

However, if you have an overdue recalled or High Demand item, you will be unable to renew anything via self-service, or borrow any new items. Please speak to staff at the enquiry desk for assistance.

Renewing and returning

How much are the fines?

  • Standard loan 30p per day
  • 7-day loan 40p per day
  • 3-day loan 50p per day
  • 1-day loan £1 per day
  • 4-hour loan £1 for the first hour and 50p for every subsequent hour or part of an hour

Fines are not charged for days the Library is closed.

If you owe more than £30.00 (undergraduates and external borrowers) or £50.00 (staff and postgraduates) in fines, you will not be able to borrow any more items or renew those already checked out to you. You should pay off some of your fines to bring them below these levels. Fines continue to accumulate if you have overdue items on your record.

Contact the Library as soon as possible if you have any questions about your Library record.
