Queer book club reads, LGBT+ movies and a Wiki-a-thon!
February marks LGBT+ History Month, which aims to promote equality, diversity and commemorate changes in people's rights over the years. The Libraries are getting involved with a series of events to celebrate and help raise awareness for this important month.
Check out the LGBT+ Collection
To mark this year’s LGBT+ History Month, we’ve set up a display of books exploring LGBT+ experiences in Britain and beyond. It’s available until 28 February on the ground floor of the Laidlaw Library, so come have a look and pick up a book!
You can also check out the full collection with over 100 titles on LGBT+ sociology, history and more through our discovery collection and our reading list. The collection was made in collaboration with the University’s LGBT+ Staff Network.
Watch BFI’s selection of queer movies
Film enthusiasts, check out BFI’s collections of new and archival queer stories and documentaries that are free to watch with your University login.
Whether you want to watch a feature length movie like The Handmaiden or a short indie film like Khwaaish, the BFIs got you covered with amazing titles! Grab your popcorn and binge these collections including Queer Britain; Too Desi, Too Queer; Most Popular LGBTQIA+ 2024; and BFI Flare LGBTQIA+.
Join our read-along this month
You can also join our read-along event this month (14–28 February) as we explore Radio Silence, a captivating coming-of-age novel that tackles issues of identity, societal pressures, diversity and the freedom of choice. The book is written by Alice Oseman, one of the most exciting writers of this generation and the genius behind the graphic novel series Heartstopper.
Physical copies of the book can be borrowed from the Libraries, while the audio and electronic versions can be accessed on Overdrive. To get involved, start reading and join the discussion forum.
Sign up to the Wiki-a-thon
Join us in the Edward Boyle Library from 1:30–4:30pm on 26 February to take part in a Wiki edit-a-thon.
We will take a look at some of the current Wiki content on trans people and activism in Yorkshire and make edits to improve the detail and accuracy of this content.
With the guidance of our Research Services team and local artists from the queer community GossipGrrrl and Kit George, you will be discovering materials that can help make the rich history of trans people in Yorkshire publicly available through Wikipedia, including resources from the University library and archives. Register your place at the Wiki edit-a-thon.
